GROUPS, WORKSHOPS, AND NEWSLETTERS

SAFHT provides a variety of group sessions and workshops free of charge to enrolled patients. Please ask your doctor/health care provider for a current schedule. Examples include Heart Healthy, Healthy You, Mental Health Workshops, and Changing Minds (a quarterly mental health newsletter. Groups and Workshops

Heart Healthy Program

This group program is designed to meet the needs of patients with high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure. Patients are generally referred to the group by their family physician, nurse practitioner, and nurse. The service includes a three-hour class provided by the dietician and nurse and covers:

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Heart healthy eating guidelines

  • Better food choices in a heart healthy diet

  • Heart Healthy cooking and dining out

  • Food labelling

  • Physical activity and your action plan

Healthy You

Using a dietary approach to improve high blood pressure, the dietician and nurse in our program take a group weight management approach that focuses on lifestyle changes that may help patients reach and maintain a healthier body weight or shape. The goal of the program is to provide participants with education to help them make healthier nutrition choices, and to promote effective self-management skills. The program involves three phases:

  • Orientation

  • Lifestyle modification

  • Follow-up with the dietician

Beyond Blue

Beyond Blue is a 6-week depression treatment & support group program which provides patients dealing with depression related to a recent or expected life change (i.e. death of a loved one, loss of a job, medical diagnosis, changing seasons etc.) a safe environment for exploring depression and its impact, and for building skills to aid in managing its symptoms. Managing Anxiety

Controlling Anxiety Learning to Manage (CALM) is a 6-week anxiety treatment & support group program which provides patients dealing with anxiety with a safe environment to learn skills and make lifestyle changes necessary for recovery. Click here for more information
